UD Las Palmas goalkeeper José Antonio Caro has made a direct appeal to the club's supporters to change their behaviour inside the stadium. The undisputed number one asked that any whistles or criticism be saved until after the final whistle, not during the match itself.
The request comes at a time of uncertainty for the team, which has suffered back-to-back defeats in LaLiga Hypermotion against Burgos and Eibar. "Si nos tienen que pitar, que sea al final del partido" (If they have to whistle at us, let it be at the end of the match), Caro stated ahead of the clash with Real Valladolid. The Yellows currently sit 11th in the table with 11 points from eight games, one point fewer than at this stage last season. However, their recent form is a concern, with just one win in their last five matches.
A period of doubt
The goalkeeper admitted the team is "trying to find the necessary emotional stability". He acknowledged the defeat at Eibar, where they conceded two goals in under ten minutes, came from a lack of early concentration. Caro, who joined the club two seasons ago and spent one as backup to Dinko Horkas, says he feels "happy after being without minutes for two seasons" and has full confidence in all his teammates.
Rubén De la Barrera's playing system, which requires the defence to stay high, suits Caro, who states he enjoys playing outside his box to defend the space left by defenders. However, he concedes the team is letting in too many goals, despite scoring plenty. Currently, Las Palmas have scored 12 but conceded 13.
Errors as lessons
The keeper addressed the topic of mistakes with candour. "Los errores te hacen mejor persona y jugador" (Errors make you a better person and player), he said. He recalled a personal error in the match against Girona that led to one of the five goals conceded in late August. He states he has made many throughout his career and will continue to do so, but works daily to minimise them.
Caro stressed the importance of being strong at home, at the Estadio de Gran Canaria, as key to fighting for higher objectives. He noted the squad has many new players, including himself after two seasons without prominence, and they need time to gel. The next fixture is a tough away trip to Mallorca, fifth in the table, on October 11th.
The goalkeeper also mentioned the adaptation of Enzo Loiodice, a midfielder who has had to fill in at left-back due to injuries. Caro insisted that wearing this shirt carries the obligation to win every Sunday, and that to do so the team must improve its concentration and fight for second balls. The squad is looking to rebuild ahead of the decisive part of the season, and the unconditional support of the stands for the full 90 minutes is, according to their goalkeeper, a fundamental pillar. The latest result, a 2-2 draw against Valladolid last Friday, shows the team's capacity to react.
